Laura Tilson always wanted to work in health care and finds it important having time to spend with her patients getting to the root cause of their symptoms. She graduated from the British School of Osteopathy with a Master’s Degree in Osteopathy. During that time she researched the role of osteopathy for terminally ill patients, and her dissertation was awarded one of the top grades. She presented her findings at the Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Physiotherapy Conference in 2010.
Laura is now furthering her studies by specialising in paediatric osteopathy at the Osteopathic Centre for Children. She has found osteopathy can help children of all ages. As part of her course she treats premature babies in two north London hospitals.
Before she became an osteopath she studied for a degree in anthropology at Durham University. This led her to examine a variety of world health care models and the integration of western orthodox medicine in the developing world. It was through this she discovered osteopathy and the important role it plays for so many patients.
Before deciding to be an osteopath, Laura worked in a variety of settings, including a care home for the elderly and a Mental Health Care Unit in a hospital. Here she saw the need for more involvement of osteopaths in care homes and to assist patients with restricted mobility. She volunteered in a hospital in Ghana in the physiotherapy unit. There she assisted with trauma, burns and intensive care patients and witnessed how beneficial manual therapy and rehabilitation can be in the acute phase of an injury.
Laura is fit and active, and plays squash, golf and has even recently attempted zumba classes! She enjoys the challenge of setting herself goals and has run several 10km races, despite not being a born runner. At university she treated marathon runners for the charity The Spinal Injuries Association. She has experience of helping patients reach their goals by keeping their bodies functioning well and pain free as well as providing advice on training, stretches and strengthening exercises to maintain this.
Laura is member of the British Osteopathic Association.
